Colombia's Power Shift as Gustavo Petro Leaves Presidency and Abelardo de la Espriella Takes Office

On Friday, 7 August 2026, President Gustavo Petro formally left the Casa de Nariño, ending his four‑year term. Accompanied by his children Antonella and Nicolás, Petro delivered a farewell speech, thanked the military honor guard and urged Colombians to remember his administration’s focus on "freedom and life."
