María Camila Potosí murder sparks nationwide outcry in Colombia
On 20 July 2026 the body of 21‑year‑old María Camila Potosí, eight months pregnant, was discovered tied up near the Meléndez River in Cali. The forensic examination showed multiple knife wounds and that the fetus was missing from her womb. Security footage captured her boarding a motorcycle on 16 July; the rider, identified as Yulieth Angulo, has been detained and is a primary suspect.
President‑elect Abelardo De La Espriella publicly condemned the killing, calling it an “aberrant crime” and urging authorities to capture those responsible while pledging stronger policies to protect women. The case has provoked protests, a family‑led search for the newborn the parents named Alaya, and a reward that was raised from 50 million to 200 million Colombian pesos for information leading to the perpetrators.
