Colombia's President Abelardo de la Espriella Forms Conservative Cabinet, Boosting Gómez Family Influence

President Abelardo de la Espriella has appointed 13 of the 18 ministries in his new Colombian government, selecting figures from the traditional right and far‑right. Key posts include Rodrigo Lara Restrepo as Interior Minister, Iván Cancino as Justice Minister, Omar Bula Escobar as Foreign Affairs Minister, Miguel Gómez Martínez as Finance Minister, Viviane Morales as Education Minister and retired General Jorge Eduardo Mora López as Defence Minister. Analysts describe the lineup as a restoration of established conservative elites with alleged links to corruption and organized crime, and a reversal of the left‑ist policies of the previous administration.

The Gómez family also regained prominence: Enrique Gómez Martínez, grandson of former president Laureano Gómez, secured a Senate seat; his brother Miguel was named Finance Minister; and his son Nicolás Gómez Arenas became chief of staff. The family’s political legacy dates back to the mid‑20th century and includes the late Álvaro Gómez Hurtado, whose 1995 assassination remains a contentious episode in Colombian history. Together, the cabinet and the Gómez appointments signal a shift toward a more conservative agenda in Colombia.
