United States invests $17 million in digital upgrades for Colombo Port
The United States has announced a $17 million investment to digitize operations at Sri Lanka’s Colombo Port. In partnership with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the funding will develop the Maritime Single Window and Port Community System to reduce paperwork, accelerate cargo processing, and lower shipping costs.
Simultaneously, Sri Lanka is undergoing significant economic shifts. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has signaled plans to open national ports and the power grid to private investment to attract foreign capital. However, the Colombo Port City project faces scrutiny; while officials expect to recoup Rs. 9.7 billion in development costs through upcoming land leases, the project has seen several high-profile investor withdrawals, including a $392 million logistics hub project from China Merchants Port Holdings.
Despite these challenges, the Colombo Port City Economic Commission reports that the development has attracted approximately $2.19 billion in total investment commitments to date.
