Colorado Avalanche face goaltending and discipline challenges

The Colorado Avalanche are facing internal challenges regarding goaltending consistency and overall game discipline. Despite possessing a high-talent roster, the team has struggled to maintain intensity throughout full 60-minute periods.

Goaltender MacKenzie Blackwood, who signed a five-year extension in late 2024 to be the designated starter, has faced scrutiny following an .867 save percentage and a 3.30 goals-against average through his first four starts. In contrast, veteran backup Scott Wedgewood has performed strongly, creating questions regarding the starting position. While Blackwood recently showed resilience with a 24-save performance against the Dallas Stars, his inconsistency remains a point of discussion.

Head coach Jared Bednar has also addressed the team's lack of consistent discipline. Following a comeback victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Bednar noted that while the team has significant offensive power, they often fail to play the right way from the start of the game. He emphasized that the team must find a way to maintain intensity and discipline for the entire duration of play to match their talent level.
