Melat Kiros Defeats Diana DeGette in Colorado Democratic Primary

Democratic socialist Melat Kiros, a 29‑year‑old Ethiopian‑American lawyer and Ph.D. student, won the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District, unseating 15‑term incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette. With roughly 49 % of the vote to DeGette’s 44 % (a third candidate Wanda James received about 7 %), Kiros became the first challenger to defeat DeGette in three decades. She was backed by Senator Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Socialists of America, Justice Democrats and other progressive groups. Her platform calls for Medicare for All, abolition of ICE and an immediate U.S. arms embargo on Israel, positions that set her apart from DeGette, who had supported defensive aid to Israel.

Kiros’ victory is part of a broader insurgent wave that saw progressive challengers top establishment Democrats in New York and elsewhere earlier in the cycle. The Colorado primary also featured other high‑profile races: Attorney General Phil Weiser defeated U.S. Senator Michael Bennet for the Democratic nomination for governor, and state Rep. Manny Rutinel beat Shannon Bird in a swing‑district House primary. These results highlight a growing split within the Colorado Democratic Party between longtime office‑holders and a new generation of left‑wing activists.

Kiros emphasized grassroots power, saying, “I didn’t back down… Now I’ll do the same in Congress,” and is now the heavy favorite to retain the safely Democratic seat in November.
