The June 2026 Colorado primaries reshaped the state’s political landscape. Attorney General Phil Weiser secured the Democratic gubernatorial nomination after a competitive race against U.S. Senator Michael Bennet, who had initially held a significant polling lead. Republican veteran Victor Marx pulled off a narrow upset to win the GOP gubernatorial nomination, edging state Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer by approximately 2,500 votes. Turnout rose to about 35.9% (≈1.5 million voters), a ten-point increase from 2024.

Marx’s victory has drawn scrutiny due to controversial personal claims and his anti-establishment stance. He has selected retired Marine colonel George Markert as his lieutenant-governor running mate. Marx has also faced criticism for anti-socialist rhetoric, suggesting military intervention to counter rising socialist candidates.

The Marx-Markert ticket will contest the November election against Weiser. However, the campaign faces significant legal challenges. The Secretary of State’s office filed a complaint alleging multiple campaign-finance violations, including 111 donors contributing $78,000 in excess of the $1,450 limit. Additionally, Marx’s online merchandise store, which sells packages up to $1,299, has been accused by lawyers of using a “patently illegal” loophole to circumvent contribution limits by omitting required disclaimers.
