Colorado faces severe drought and wildfire threats to watersheds

Colorado is facing severe water shortages driven by unprecedented drought and climate change, impacting both agricultural operations and watershed stability. In the Yampa River basin, water managers at the Upper Yampa Water Conservation District have had to implement significant cuts to water allotments. Some ranchers have been forced to cull cattle herds or truck in water to maintain livestock during the dry season.

Beyond immediate scarcity, water managers are struggling to protect vital watersheds from wildfire threats. In the Routt National Forest, crews have engaged in intensive manual labor to thin overgrown forests near critical infrastructure like the Stillwater Ditch to prevent fires from damaging water supplies. These mitigation efforts face significant challenges, as the scale of the wildfire threat to Colorado's watersheds appears to exceed available funding.
