Colorado leaders warn of safety net breakdown under new federal bill

Local leaders and healthcare providers in Colorado’s mountain communities are expressing concern over the impending overhaul of the national social safety net. The changes stem from the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’ passed by congressional Republicans in July 2025.

According to Congressional Budget Office analyses, the legislation is projected to cut federal Medicaid spending by over $1 trillion and reduce SNAP funding by between $187 billion and $287 billion over the next decade. The bill is also expected to add $4.5 trillion to the national deficit.

The new regulations introduce work requirements and tighter renewal periods for assistance programs. While the Trump administration maintains these measures are necessary to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse, local officials in resource-strained counties warn that the changes will dismantle critical services and increase the burden on local governments and community organizations.
