Colorado Wildfire and Flash Floods Prompt Evacuations and Road Closures

A wildfire dubbed the Cross Canyon Fire burned more than 150 acres near the Colorado‑Utah state line in Dolores County, prompting pre‑evacuation notices for residents and the evacuation of two homes. The blaze is being fought by Bureau of Land Management crews, local emergency personnel and aerial resources under hot, dry and windy conditions.

Separately, heavy rain on the Gold Mountain burn scar in Ouray County caused flash flooding that forced evacuations near Ponderosa Village and Cutler Creek Drive, and led to the closure of U.S. Highway 550 on Red Mountain Pass. County officials warned residents to move to higher ground and reported multiple mud and rock slides along the highway. Both incidents illustrate the strain on Colorado’s emergency services as the state faces a string of summer wildfires and severe weather events.
