Firefighter Nathan Matthews dies; Oregon blaze nears Sisters town

Nathan Matthews, a 43‑year‑old firefighter from Lincoln, Nebraska, died on Friday from severe burn injuries he sustained on June 27 during a fast‑moving wildfire near the Colorado‑Utah border. The incident, described as a burnover, involved the Knowles Fire, which later merged into the larger Snyder Fire. Matthews was part of a Rifle Helitack crew; three of his crewmates—Emily Barker (38), Nick Hutcherson (27) and Sydney Watson (26)—were killed at the scene.

At the same time, a lightning‑caused blaze called the Akawa Butte Fire burned about 40 square miles (105 km²) north of the small Oregon city of Sisters, a community of roughly 3,000 residents. Winds gusting up to 30 mph (50 km/h) threatened to push the flames toward the town. As of Saturday the fire was only 5 % contained. About 30 people were evacuated to the local high school shelter, with a similar number staying in nearby recreational‑vehicle parks. Sisters Mayor Jennifer Letz said the city was not in immediate danger and business continued as usual.

The western United States is experiencing an unusually active fire season, with dry, windy conditions and a record lack of snow. Across Canada, 926 fires were burning, and roughly 300 aircraft and 5,300 personnel were engaged in firefighting operations nationwide.
