Colorado-Utah wildfire firefighter fatalities

Entities: Emily Barker · Nathan Matthews · Nick Hutcherson · Jennifer Letz · Sydney Watson

Overview

In late June 2026 a fast‑moving wildfire on the Colorado‑Utah border killed three Helitack crew members—Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson—while they sought shelter in emergency protective tents. A fourth firefighter, 43‑year‑old Nathan Matthews of Lincoln, Nebraska, died on July 24 after severe burns from the same burn‑over that trapped the crew on the Knowles (later Snyder) fire. His death was confirmed on July 25, bringing the total fatalities to four and making the incident the deadliest U.S. wildland‑fire loss since the 2013 Yarnell Hill fire. U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy called the loss “another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family.” Officials cited extreme weather and announced a review of safety protocols for helitack crews.

The same day, a separate lightning‑ignited Akawa Butte Fire burned about 40 sq mi north of Sisters, Oregon. Winds of up to 30 mph threatened the town, prompting evacuation of roughly 30 residents to a high‑school shelter and another 30 to RV parks. The fire was only 5 % contained, underscoring the unusually active western fire season marked by drought, low snowpack and high temperatures across the United States and Canada.
