Colorado wildfire kills three firefighters, injures two
Three wildland firefighters were killed and two were injured on June 27 when a rapid change in fire conditions trapped a five‑person Rifle Helitack crew battling the Knowles Fire near the Colorado‑Utah border. The crew deployed fire shelters, a mandatory protective device, but three crew members—Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson and Sydney Watson—did not survive. The Knowles Fire merged with nearby lightning‑caused blazes to form the larger Snyder Fire, which has burned more than 28,000 acres and prompted evacuations and a disaster emergency declaration by Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
Federal investigators from the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have launched a Serious Accident Investigation to determine the cause of the fatal burn‑over. The incident has highlighted the limits of fire shelters, which, while credited with saving lives in past incidents, do not guarantee protection in extreme heat and wind conditions. Officials stressed the importance of training, early deployment, and clear escape zones to improve firefighter safety in increasingly severe wildfire seasons.
