Colosseum expands nighttime tours to combat Rome heatwaves

To combat extreme summer heat, the Colosseum in Rome has expanded its nighttime tour schedule. Supported by funding from the Italian Ministry of Culture, the monument is now open for night visits four nights a week—including Fridays and Saturdays—instead of the previous two.

Guided tours, which can accommodate up to 275 visitors per session, run until 23:00. These nocturnal excursions allow tourists to explore the arena and underground passages in cooler temperatures. The program is highly popular, with summer bookings already fully reserved, and may continue through September.

Other Roman landmarks have implemented similar adaptations to manage high temperatures. The Roman Forum has introduced special evening lighting for visitors, and the Baths of Caracalla have resumed its ‘Notturno Imperiale’ evening openings.
