Columbia University study finds depression stalls new neuron growth

A study published in Nature Medicine and led by researchers at Columbia University Irving Medical Center has found that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with stalled neurogenesis in the hippocampus.

By analyzing approximately 500,000 brain cells from 11 patients with MDD and 19 control subjects, researchers identified that the production of new neurons is functionally compromised. Instead of a simple loss of stem cells, the data showed an accumulation of early-stage cellular states and a significant reduction in mature neurons.

The molecular analysis revealed dysregulation in genes responsible for synaptic transmission, cellular metabolism, and energy transport. Additionally, the tissue from individuals with depression exhibited heightened immune-related gene activity and markers of neuroinflammation. These findings suggest that depression may involve deeper structural and cellular changes than previously understood through neurotransmitter-centric models, potentially offering new pathways for therapeutic intervention.
