The COMAC C919, China’s domestically developed narrow-body passenger jet, has completed its first scheduled international commercial flight. Operated by Air China, the aircraft flew from Beijing Capital International Airport to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on August 12, 2026. The new route is expected to operate as a daily round-trip service.

This milestone marks a significant step in Beijing’s strategic effort to challenge the global aerospace duopoly held by Boeing and Airbus. While the C919 is designed to compete directly with the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo, industry analysts note several remaining hurdles for the manufacturer, COMAC. These include a production rate that remains significantly lower than its Western competitors, a heavy reliance on foreign-made components—such as LEAP-1C engines from the CFM International joint venture—and the lack of certification from major aviation regulators like the FAA and EASA.

Since entering commercial service in May 2023, the C919 has primarily operated on domestic Chinese routes. To date, COMAC has delivered fewer than 40 aircraft, with current operators including Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines.
