COMAC C919 international service expansion

China’s domestically developed COMAC C919 passenger jet has commenced its first scheduled international service. Operated by Air China, the narrowbody aircraft is performing a daily round-trip service between Beijing Capital International Airport and Ulaanbaatar’s Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Mongolia.

This international debut, completed on August 12, 2026, follows several years of domestic operation within China, where the aircraft has primarily served routes between mainland China and Hong Kong since entering commercial service in May 2023. The selection of the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route was influenced by Mongolia’s recognition of China’s civil aviation airworthiness standards. This expansion is intended to help the aircraft gather international operating data and develop expertise in cross-border operations, such as overseas maintenance and air traffic coordination. The service is integrated into global ticketing systems and is available to the general public.

As of August 2026, the C919 has served 57 routes and carried more than 7.5 million passengers across various domestic and regional services. While the service marks a significant milestone in Beijing’s efforts to build a domestic aviation industry capable of challenging Western dominance, the aircraft remains dependent on Western components, such as CFM International LEAP engines. To compete globally against the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo families, COMAC faces ongoing challenges, including a lack of type certification from major Western regulators like the FAA or EASA, which limits its ability to operate in many international markets. Additionally, COMAC has faced lower production rates; for example, it delivered 15 aircraft in 2025, below its target of 75. As of August 2026, COMAC has delivered fewer than 40 aircraft.
