Comiso Airport faces criticism over unsustainable service costs

Claudio Melchiorre, president of the Mec (Movimento Elettori e Consumatori), has criticized the high costs associated with using Comiso Airport, labeling them unsustainable for both airlines and passengers. According to Mec analyses, the total cost for each takeoff and landing at Comiso amounts to approximately 24.05 euros per passenger, assuming an 85% load factor.

The Mec argues that these excessive service fees are the primary reason for the airport's lack of use and represent a significant management failure. The organization has denounced potential plans to use public funds to attract Ryanair back to the airport, calling such moves a waste of taxpayer resources that merely masks deep-seated inefficiencies and market-distorting tariffs.

To meet regional tourism goals and manage a projected 50 million passengers in Sicily by 2028, the Mec is calling for a radical change in governance and a move away from subsidizing inefficient structures.
