Commercial pilots face higher radiation exposure than nuclear technicians

Long-haul commercial pilots accumulate significantly higher levels of ionizing radiation annually compared to nuclear power plant technicians. While nuclear operators typically receive between 0.2 and 0.8 mSv per year due to heavy shielding from concrete and water, pilots on long-distance routes accumulate between 1.5 and 3.5 mSv. On polar routes, this exposure can increase to 4 or 5 mSv.

The disparity is primarily due to altitude and the lack of shielding in aircraft. At approximately 35,000 feet, the atmosphere provides less protection against cosmic rays, and secondary neutrons contribute a significant portion of the dose. Unlike nuclear facilities, commercial aircraft cannot be equipped with heavy shielding, such as lead, without compromising flight capabilities.

Experts distinguish between routine radiation doses and the risk of catastrophic accidents. While pilots face higher daily exposure, the nuclear industry focuses on managing the low probability of major incidents through strict safety protocols and reactor designs.
