A large-scale study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, led by researchers from Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has linked flight crews to an increased risk of death from radiation-related cancers. By analyzing approximately 13 million U.S. death records between 2020 and 2024 across 503 different occupations, researchers found that radiation-related cancers accounted for roughly 6.9% of deaths among flight attendants and 6.7% among pilots, compared to approximately 5% in the general working population.
The elevated risks specifically involve cancers associated with radiation exposure, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and various skin, breast, and thyroid cancers. The study suggests that aircrew members may absorb between 3 and 6 millisieverts of radiation annually, significantly more than the average passenger. This exposure is attributed to cosmic radiation at high altitudes, where the thinner atmosphere provides less protection.
While the US Federal Aviation Administration recognizes ionizing radiation exposure, the research highlights that the agency does not currently establish federal dose limits or require mandatory monitoring. Labor representatives have noted that while these risks are known, crews often lack sufficient training or information regarding radiation exposure, leading to calls for increased accountability and better education regarding these occupational health risks.
