Committee to Protect Journalists reports 191 media workers killed in Gaza

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has updated its findings regarding media fatalities in the Gaza conflict, stating that Israeli forces have killed 191 Palestinian journalists and media workers since the start of the war.

Following a review of its data, the New York-based organization clarified that 19 individuals previously identified as journalists or media workers were actually militants or combat participants. The CPJ also removed three individuals from its list due to insufficient evidence of their professional roles, while reinstating six cases, including two Israeli journalists killed during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack.

CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg emphasized that the organization’s determinations are based strictly on whether individuals meet the definition of a journalist, regardless of political affiliation or government pressure. The group noted that Israeli forces remain responsible for the majority of journalist killings worldwide since 2023.

Israel has denied targeting journalists, alleging that some media workers are members of Hamas or other armed groups posing as reporters. Critics, however, continue to accuse the Israeli military of deliberately targeting press members to limit war coverage.
