Committee to Protect Journalists reviews Gaza journalist casualty database
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPU) has launched a formal audit of its Gaza journalist casualty database after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad published obituaries identifying several individuals previously listed as reporters as combatants. The review led to the removal of eight names confirmed to have taken part in hostilities and an additional twelve removed for lacking evidence of journalistic work or for having survived attacks.
As of June 25, the CPJ’s tally for journalists and media workers killed by Israel since the October 7, 2023 war stood at 209. The organization said the review, expected to conclude in July, will re‑examine all remaining entries to ensure compliance with international humanitarian law, which protects civilians—including journalists—provided they do not engage directly in hostilities.
