Community initiatives combat isolation in apartment living

Recent observations highlight how modern living habits, such as the frequent use of elevators, may negatively impact longevity by reducing physical activity and social interaction. In traditional apartment buildings, stairs often served as spontaneous meeting points that fostered community connections and cognitive health through social engagement.

To combat urban isolation, community-led initiatives are emerging in residential buildings. For example, in some Italian apartment complexes, residents are establishing small, shared libraries in common areas. These spontaneous collections of books, such as the initiative led by Giovanni Bonomo, transform lobbies and relaxation areas into social hubs. These shared spaces encourage residents to interact across different generations and backgrounds, helping to rebuild the social fabric of communal living.
