Commuting costs rise as office attendance increases

As more employees return to physical offices, the financial and time burdens of commuting are increasing. According to data from Ipsos, 49% of workers now commute five or more days per week, while the proportion of those with no office requirement has fallen to 13%.

Economic pressures are compounding this shift. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $4.07 by the end of August 2026. Additionally, vehicle maintenance and repair costs have risen 6.6% year-over-year.

While auto insurance saw a slight decline in July, the national average for full-coverage insurance remains $187 per month. Other significant expenses include the cost of vehicle ownership, which can reach $11,577 for new vehicles, averaging approximately 77.18 cents per mile.
