Como Mayor bans bicycle riding in historic center

The Mayor of Como, Alessandro Rapinese, has introduced a ban on riding bicycles in approximately 30 streets within the city’s historic center, effective this September. Under the new regulations, cyclists using both electric and traditional bicycles will be required to dismount and walk through designated zones.

The decision follows a June incident in which Mayor Rapinese was struck by an electric bicycle while leaving city hall. While the mayor was not seriously injured, he described the experience as a catalyst for the policy, referring to electric bikes as “beasts” and emphasizing the need for pedestrian safety in the densely populated, tourist-heavy area.

The measure is part of a broader Limited Traffic Zone (ZTL) initiative aimed at managing tourist growth and regulating vehicle access. However, the ban has sparked significant controversy. Local politicians, resident groups, and activists have accused the mayor of pursuing a personal vendetta. Critics argue the restrictions disproportionately affect delivery riders and commuters, and have organized petitions and planned protest rides to oppose the new rules.
