Compact EV market expands with new models from Suzuki, BYD, and Renault

The compact electric vehicle (EV) market is seeing significant shifts as manufacturers focus on efficiency and affordability over extreme range. In Japan, the 'kei car' segment is becoming a competitive arena for both domestic and international players. Suzuki is preparing to launch the e SKY in autumn 2026, featuring a 26kWh lithium iron phosphate battery designed to achieve a 310km range through high efficiency rather than battery size. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturer BYD has entered the Japanese market with the RACCO, a model specifically developed to meet local kei car standards.

In Europe, the market for small EVs is expanding due to falling production costs and improved battery technology. The Renault 5 E-Tech has been highlighted as a benchmark for the class, offering a balance of design, performance, and cost-effectiveness. Other notable models in the European small EV landscape include the Fiat Grande Panda, Volkswagen ID.3, and Citroën e-C3, reflecting a broader industry trend toward making electric mobility accessible for urban environments.
