Automakers are expanding their electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid market presence through diverse global product strategies. While initial efforts focused on microcars, manufacturers are scaling up with varied lineups, such as Kia’s compact EV3 and entry-level EV2. In the premium segment, Mazda’s 6e sedan and Volvo’s EX60 are emerging as key contenders.

Recent market data from Q2 2026 indicates a shift toward hybrid vehicles, which accounted for 16.8% of new vehicle financing. In response, Kia is transitioning its North American Niro lineup to an exclusive hybrid model. Mazda is also deepening its reliance on partnerships to navigate the EV transition, specifically through its joint venture with Chinese manufacturer Changan. This collaboration has produced the EZ-60 platform, which will underpin the upcoming CX-6e SUV.

As the transition to EVs continues, the reduction in required components has lowered barriers to entry, allowing emerging economies to develop domestic brands. Notable examples include Vietnam’s VinFast, Saudi Arabia’s Ceer, and Mexico’s Olinia. Additionally, Turkey’s TOGG and Morocco’s Neo Motors are utilizing existing production bases to target European markets.

In Europe, the industry is shifting focus toward the B-segment market, moving away from high-priced SUVs to prioritize small electric vehicles. This trend is driven by a proposed European Commission ‘super credit’ mechanism, intended to remain in effect until 2034. Under this proposal, small zero-emission cars under 4.2 meters in length would be treated as 1.3 vehicles in fleet CO2 calculations, incentivizing affordable models like the Volkswagen ID. Polo, Renault 5, Citroën ë-C3, and Fiat Grande Panda to compete with Chinese brands.

To support these shifts, supply chains are becoming more localized. In the United States, Hyundai Steel is constructing an electric arc furnace steel mill in Louisiana to provide carbon-reduced steel to global manufacturers.
