Comunes party loses legal status in Colombia after electoral failure

The Colombian National Electoral Council (CNE) has officially revoked the legal status of the Comunes party. The decision follows the party's failure to meet the required electoral threshold during the legislative elections held on March 8.

Comunes, a political organization formed following the 2016 Peace Agreement and the demobilization of the FARC, failed to secure the 3% of valid votes necessary to maintain its legal standing under Article 108 of the Constitution. In the recent elections, the party ran as part of a coalition with the Fuerza Ciudadana party, but the alliance did not achieve the required representation in the Senate or the House of Representatives.

The loss of legal status marks the end of a special representation regime that granted the party 10 guaranteed seats—five in the Senate and five in the House—for the 2018-2022 and 2022-2026 legislative periods. The CNE's administrative action formalizes the removal of the party from the Single Registry of Parties.
