Conagua strengthens water infrastructure in Acapulco

The National Water Commission (Conagua) is strengthening water infrastructure in Acapulco, Guerrero, to ensure consistent supply and protect the population from weather-related disruptions.

To mitigate the impact of intense rains and cyclones, such as hurricanes Otis and John, Conagua is constructing radial wells. These wells extract water from the subsoil, which is naturally filtered and less susceptible to the heavy currents and sediment that previously damaged pumping equipment in the Papagayo River.

Additional measures include replacing traditional pumps with submersible models capable of operating during floods, elevating some equipment to heights of 9 to 11 meters, and installing storage tanks in high-altitude areas of the basin. This setup allows for water distribution via gravity, reducing total dependence on the electrical grid, which is often compromised during severe storms.
