Conakry building collapse: Five victims buried in Hafia 1

Five victims of a building collapse in the Hafia 1 sector of Conakry, Guinea, were buried on Friday, August 14, 2026. The victims, identified as Mariama Cissé (70), Fodé Kaba Cissé (22), Amara Fadiga (16), Moustapha Diakhaby (16), and Fatoumata Camara (9), were sleeping in a residential building when a five-story construction site collapsed during the night of August 10-11.

Following the tragedy, which left at least nine others injured, a government delegation led by Minister Delegate for National Defense, General Ibrahima Kalil Condé, visited the families to convey condolences from President Mamadi Doumbouya. Souleymane Cissé, a former Minister of Planning representing the victims' families, called for profound reforms in Guinea’s construction sector to address the anarchy and lack of rigorous policies that contribute to such disasters. While acknowledging the rapid response of the Ministry of Habitat and security forces in rescue operations, Cissé emphasized the need for collective responsibility to prevent future tragedies.
