West Africa building collapse crisis

Overview

Since June 2026, a series of structural failures has swept West Africa, particularly in Nigeria, Ghana, and Guinea. In Ghana, a two-storey building collapse in Adenta killed one person on 4 June, followed by a multi-storey construction collapse in Accra’s North Industrial Area on 7 June that killed three. In response, Ghana’s Vice President urged strict adherence to safety regulations and warned against building in flood-prone areas. Nigeria has faced significant casualties, including nine deaths in an Alakija, Lagos, collapse on 26 June. This incident prompted calls for reform, with experts citing regulatory failures and substandard materials. Subsequent Nigerian incidents include the sealing of a building in Abesan, Lagos, and the evacuation of a structure in Aba on 11 July; a canopy collapse in Gombe State on 11 July killed one worker; and a thunderstorm-related collapse in Ogun State on 28 July that killed three. On 1 August, the Elite Five Star Lodge in Anambra State collapsed, killing two. In Guinea, the crisis has been marked by recurring disasters in Conakry. A nine-storey tower collapsed on 16-17 July, killing five and leading to the detention of the owner. During the night of 10-11 August, a five-storey building under construction in the Hafia 1 neighborhood collapsed, impacting a neighboring villa. The incident killed at least five people—identified as Mariama Cissé, Fodé Kaba Cissé, Amara Fadiga, Moustapha Diakhaby, and Fatoumata Camara—and injured nine others. On 14 August, the victims were buried. In response, Guinean Minister Djénabou Touré announced plans to evacuate residents from high-risk zones. Following the Hafia collapse, Souleymane Cissé, a former Minister of Planning, called for ‘profound reforms in Guinea’s construction sector to address the anarchy and lack of rigorous policies’ contributing to such disasters. On 28 August, additional accidents occurred in the region.
