Conakry building collapse kills five, injures four, owner detained

A nine‑storey residential tower under construction collapsed in the Démoudoula district of Conakry, Guinea, on the night of 16‑17 July 2026. Rescue teams reported a death toll of five to six people and three to four injured survivors, many of whom were taken to the Sino‑Guinean Hospital and the CHU de Donka. Colonel Ibrahima Sory Kaba, director of the regional civil protection, said, “We have retrieved four conscious victims… and six others who were unconscious and are considered deceased.” The owner of the unfinished building was detained for questioning, and the Guinean government announced an immediate investigation. Authorities ordered stricter inspections of all ongoing construction projects across the capital and the country, warning of administrative sanctions and criminal prosecution for violations of urban planning regulations.
