Conavi ordered to address road safety risks on Route 32

The Comptroller General of the Republic has ordered Costa Rica’s National Highway Council (Conavi) to address road safety risks regarding the construction of roundabouts on Route 32. The Comptroller noted that Conavi designed seven roundabouts with shorter lengths than required, creating risks for road safety and mobility.

Correcting the original geometric designs has required an additional $1.4 million in payments, which is added to the $5.4 million already spent on the structures. The Comptroller also alleged that Conavi made contractual, operational, and expropriation decisions without sufficient technical support and failed to properly safeguard project documentation. Conavi has been ordered to create a roadmap to prioritize and execute a transition toward definitive solutions for the highway to ensure user safety.
