Coney Island: Large Burmese python captured in Brooklyn
A Burmese python measuring more than eight feet in length was captured in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn this past weekend. The reptile was discovered in a high-traffic recreational zone frequented by hundreds of visitors daily.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the owner of the captured snake also possessed a second python and has been issued a fine. Authorities warned that released Burmese pythons pose a danger to humans and can cause significant damage to native wildlife populations by consuming large prey such as deer, wild boar, and even alligators.
This incident follows a similar event two weeks ago in Freehold, New Jersey, where another Burmese python exceeding eight feet was found beneath a residential home. This is part of a series of sightings of large constrictors in the New York area, including a boa constrictor seen in the Upper West Side last year.
