Burmese python sightings in New York and New Jersey

Overview

In August 2026, a series of sightings involving large Burmese pythons occurred in the New York and New Jersey area.

On August 8, an 8-foot, 40-pound python was rescued from under a shed in Freehold, New Jersey. Rescuers had to remove floorboards to access the animal, which had recently consumed an opossum. Officials suggested the snake may have been released by an owner.

On August 24, a second Burmese python exceeding eight feet was captured in the Coney Island area of Brooklyn. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported that the owner of the captured snake also possessed a second python and has been issued a fine. Authorities noted that such releases pose risks to humans and native wildlife populations.
