Italy energy crisis threatens industrial competitiveness and SMEs

Italian businesses and industry associations are warning of a severe economic crisis driven by rising energy costs and inflation. In August 2026, national inflation rose to 3.3%, largely due to a 17.1% year-on-year increase in energy prices. Electricity prices in Italy saw a significant spike in September, rising 73.3% compared to the 2025 average.

Industry groups report widespread distress. CNA reports that 84% of companies state energy costs significantly impact business management, while 78.2% are concerned about geopolitical tensions in energy markets. Furthermore, 56.8% of companies have experienced reduced profit margins. The ceramics sector is particularly vulnerable, with potential annual cost increases of 80 to 120 million euros due to the European Emissions Trading System (ETS).

In the transport sector, CNA Fita Marche warns that over 2,800 companies in the Marche region face insolvency risks due to rising diesel and energy costs. Confcommercio estimates that the retail, tourism, and catering sectors could face over one billion euros in additional costs during the second half of 2026. Regional leaders, including those from Veneto, are calling for a joint strategy among Northern Italian manufacturing regions to address these structural challenges and protect industrial competitiveness.
