Rising energy costs for Italian businesses

Businesses in Italy, particularly in the Brescia province, have experienced significant surges in energy costs. In the tourism and hospitality sectors, electricity bills rose by over 40% compared to the previous summer, with some hotels and restaurants seeing increases approaching 50%.

This local trend reflects broader national economic shifts, as Italian inflation rose to 3.3% in August, driven largely by regulated energy costs. Nationally, commerce, hospitality, and catering businesses incurred an estimated 870 million euros in additional energy costs between June and August.

A survey by CNA indicates that energy costs and volatility have become structural challenges for micro and small enterprises. Approximately 76.5% of surveyed businesses reported increased energy expenditure over a six-month period, with 84% stating these costs have a “relevant impact” on their activity. These rising expenses have reduced profit margins for 56.8% of businesses, while only 20.4% have successfully transferred costs to customers through price increases. Geopolitical tensions remain a primary concern for 78.2% of businesses regarding their impact on energy markets.
