Sicily faces emergency as wildfires destroy 47,000 hectares

Sicily is facing a severe emergency due to widespread wildfires and heatwaves. Regional authorities have declared a state of crisis, with Salvo Cocina appointed as the commissioner delegated to manage the emergency. Since the beginning of the year, more than 6,000 fires have been recorded, destroying over 47,000 hectares of land and causing estimated damages of 600 million euros.

Firefighting efforts involving the fire brigade, foresters, and Civil Protection volunteers are ongoing across several provinces, including Catania, Trapani, Caltanissetta, and Ragusa. In the Catania area, fires have caused significant concern due to their proximity to industrial sites like the Condorelli factory.

In response to broader security and order concerns, inter-agency operations are also being conducted in Siracusa, specifically in Ortigia and the Borgata district. These checks aim to ensure compliance with maritime, road, and administrative regulations during the high tourist season.

Separately, the Confintesa health union has called for an urgent audit of the 118 emergency services management in the Catania-Ragusa-Siracusa area. The union cited operational criticalities, high staff turnover, and disproportionate resource allocation during emergency missions.
