DRC seeks to transform Lobito Corridor into industrial rail manufacturing hub
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is seeking to transform its mining sector by moving from raw material exports to local industrial processing. At the Angola Hub Transport & Logistics Summit 2026, Vice-Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba proposed the creation of a consortium to extract iron ore, transform it into steel, and manufacture rails locally. This initiative is strategically linked to the development of the Lobito Corridor, a major railway axis involving the DRC, Angola, and Zambia.
Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba further emphasized that the Lobito Corridor should serve as an industrial engine rather than just a transit route for minerals. The goal is to foster regional value chains in copper, cobalt, and electrical equipment, while creating local jobs and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. This shift aims to reduce reliance on international imports and strengthen African industrial capacity.
