Congo burial teams face hostility during Ebola outbreak

Burial teams in Congo’s Ituri province are facing extreme physical fatigue, mental strain, and community hostility while managing a deadly Ebola outbreak. Since the outbreak began in mid-May, the disease has resulted in nearly 3,200 deaths among more than 6,500 confirmed cases.

Front-line workers, such as Yuma Adolphe, are tasked with digging graves and handling coffins to prevent the spread of the virus through contact with the bodily fluids of the deceased. These teams often face attacks from bereaved families who are frustrated by the prohibition of traditional burial rites. Despite earning $20 a day and facing significant risks, workers report that they continue their efforts to ensure community protection.
