Congo constitutional revision sparks split among religious leaders
Pastor Marcello Jérémie Tunasi, founder of the Compassion Church and a prominent figure in Congo’s evangelical movement, announced on 24 June 2026 that he will remain neutral in the debate over a possible constitutional revision. He said, “Choosing one side against the other would divide the spiritual family that God has given us,” urging dialogue and national cohesion.
The Catholic bishops' conference (CENCO) likewise showed internal disagreement. Coordinating body RCET‑CPS leader Jean‑Pierre Lisanga Bonganga noted that “there is no consensus among the bishops” and that many Catholic youths and leaders oppose the draft, which they view as influenced by foreign interests. CENCO’s bishops issued a statement declaring the nation “in peril” and rejecting the proposed changes, saying they see no necessity, urgency or opportunity for a rewrite.
Both religious camps highlight the deepening political and social divisions surrounding the constitutional reform, which remains a contentious issue in Congo’s public discourse.
