Congo fan Michel Mboladinga channels Patrice Lumumba at World Cup 2026

Congolese supporter Michel Mboladinga became a striking presence at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, standing motionless in the stands and striking the pose of a statue of Patrice Lumumba, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s first prime minister. His gestures – a hand raised, a finger to his temple and covering his mouth – reference the silence around Congo’s long‑standing conflict and the 1961 assassination of Lumumba, drawing criticism from FIFA, which later limited camera focus on him.

Mboladinga first appeared in Guadalajara, Mexico, during the Congo–Colombia match and later at Congo’s 5‑0 victory over Iraq. He was denied a U.S. visa because of the Ebola outbreak in the Congo, forcing him to return to Kinshasa for the tournament’s remaining games. His performance has sparked discussion about African anti‑colonial history and the role of sport in political expression.
