Congo launches Ebola drug and vaccine trials amid deadly outbreak

Clinical trials are underway in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to combat a deadly Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain. The outbreak has resulted in thousands of confirmed cases and deaths across several provinces, with Ituri province serving as the epicenter.

Two distinct research efforts are currently active. One study is evaluating obeldesivir, an antiviral pill developed by Gilead, as a post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent infection in those recently exposed. Another study, known as BRAVO and coordinated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is testing the effectiveness of the Ervebo vaccine against this specific strain. The BRAVO study aims to include up to 20,000 participants, focusing on frontline workers and pregnant women in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

Because no vaccine or treatment is currently approved specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, these trials are critical to interrupting transmission and protecting high-risk individuals, including healthcare workers and family members of the infected.
