Congo potash project nears launch as processing plant nears completion

Congo’s Minister of Mining Industries and Geology, Hurbain Fiacre Opo, recently inspected the Mboukoumassi potash project in the Kouilou department. The site, managed by Luyuan des Mines Congo (LMC), is nearing its launch phase, with the processing plant reported to be more than 80 percent complete.

The Mboukoumassi deposit is estimated to hold approximately 896 million tonnes of potash. The first phase of production is expected to yield roughly 100,000 tonnes. The inspection included an underground visit 350 metres below the surface to monitor working conditions and the progress of the main shaft sinking.

The project operates under a mining convention signed in 2018 and ratified by the Congolese Parliament in 2021. The government's oversight aims to ensure that resource development adheres to regulations and provides economic and social benefits to local communities.
