Infrastructure and industrial development in Congo
Overview
Infrastructure and industrial development projects are advancing in the Republic of the Congo.
In the mining sector, the Mboukoumassi potash project in the Kouilou department, managed by Luyuan des Mines Congo (LMC), is approaching its launch phase. Following an inspection by the Minister of Mining Industries and Geology, Hurbain Fiacre Opo, the processing plant is reported to be over 80 percent complete. The inspection included a visit 350 metres underground to monitor shaft sinking and working conditions. The Mboukoumassi deposit is estimated to contain approximately 896 million tonnes of potash, with the first production phase expected to yield roughly 100,000 tonnes. The project operates under a mining convention signed in 2018 and ratified in 2021.
Simultaneously, maritime infrastructure is being modernized at the Port of Pointe-Noire. Congo Terminal, a subsidiary of AGL, is progressing with the construction of the Môle Est, a 27-hectare facility designed to be a 100 percent electric container terminal. Scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2027, the terminal will feature a -17 meter draft to accommodate large international container ships up to 400 meters in length and 24,000 TEU capacity. To reduce emissions, the terminal will utilize fully electric handling equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes and electric terminal tractors, alongside sustainability measures like solar water heating.
Congo Terminal has also completed the structural construction of a new refrigerated storage park at the Môle Est platform. This expansion, which includes 24 reefer walkways and 1,680 refrigerated connections, increases the company’s total capacity from 1,869 to 3,549 connections to support regional demand for perishable goods.
