Congolese Boxer Roméo Katompa Killed in Johannesburg Xenophobic Attack

Congolese professional boxer Roméo Katompa, known as “Bololo,” was burned alive during an overnight mob assault in Johannesburg on the night of 16–17 July. Katompa, a long‑term South African resident, was married to a South African woman and had one child. He was a respected cruiser‑weight fighter and sparring partner of former WBC champion Junior Makabu.

South African police have opened an investigation, but details of the attack remain limited. Preliminary reports link the murder to the latest wave of xenophobic violence sweeping parts of South Africa, where foreign nationals have increasingly been targeted by extremist vigilante groups. The killing underscores persistent anti‑migrant hostility that has previously claimed the lives of other African residents, including Cameroonians.
