Congress convoy attack in Nagaon prompts ECI appeal

Tensions have escalated in Nagaon ahead of the October 6 Lok Sabha by-election following an alleged attack on a Congress convoy in the Samaguri Assembly segment. During a campaign drive through Barma, supporters of the BJP reportedly waved black flags and raised slogans, after which unidentified individuals allegedly hurled stones at vehicles carrying APCC president Gaurav Gogoi, MP Rakibul Hussain, and candidate Sibamoni Bora.

The confrontation resulted in injuries to two journalists, Bhaskar Das and Gulzar Hussain, who were reportedly assaulted during the commotion. In response, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has approached the Election Commission of India (ECI), seeking the immediate removal of the Nagaon District Commissioner-cum-District Election Officer from election duties.

The APCC expressed a loss of confidence in the neutrality of the local election machinery, disputing official claims that the incident was a “sudden and completely unforeseen occurrence.” The party maintains that the administration had received advance warnings regarding potential threats to its leaders. Congress officials have lodged formal complaints at the Nagaon Sadar Police Station seeking stringent action.
