Congress demands review of E20 petrol policy over inflation and vehicle concerns

The Congress party has demanded an immediate review of the central government’s E20 petrol policy, labeling the initiative ‘short-sighted’ and ‘anti-people.’ The party alleges that the mandate to blend 20 per cent ethanol with petrol is driving up food prices and causing technical issues for motorists.

Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh claimed that diverting agricultural feedstocks, such as sugarcane and foodgrains like maize and rice, toward ethanol production has tightened market availability. He cited reports indicating that sugar prices rose from Rs 48 to Rs 67 per kg and jaggery increased from Rs 50 to Rs 65 per kg over a three-month period. Additionally, Ramesh noted price hikes in rice, maize flour, and animal feed.

Beyond food inflation, the party raised concerns regarding vehicle compatibility. Ramesh argued that motorists using E20 fuel may face reduced mileage and potential engine damage, particularly in older vehicles not specifically designed for the higher ethanol blend.
