India's E20 fuel policy faces consumer protest

Entities: E20 Janta Party · Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, India · Delhi Taxi and Tourist Association · Nitin Gadkari · Delhi Taxi and Tourist Transporters Association

Overview

India’s mandatory 20 % ethanol‑blended petrol (E20) remained unchanged as of July 2026. The government reiterated that any increase would require further scientific study and stakeholder consultation. Officials highlighted that the target was achieved five years ahead of schedule, saving roughly ₹1.97 trillion in foreign‑exchange, cutting crude‑oil imports by about 316 lakh tonnes and generating over ₹1.66 lakh crore for farmers. Monitoring of more than 23 crore vehicles, including older two‑wheelers and cars, found no verifiable engine failures, though a modest 3‑5 % mileage loss persists in some older models originally designed for E10 fuel. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari challenged critics to produce evidence of damage, labeling negative narratives a "paid campaign." The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas continued to advise owners of older vehicles to follow manufacturer guidelines while it monitors fuel quality and consumer awareness. The rollout is part of a broader strategy to cut carbon emissions, reduce dependence on imported oil and boost farmer incomes. In parallel, the government introduced E85 for flex‑fuel vehicles and announced that Mercedes‑Benz India will make all its petrol models sold from January 2026 compatible with an E25 blend, underscoring industry support for higher ethanol blends. The Ministry is finalising a policy, expected by September 2026, to promote ethanol as a household cooking fuel, including capital subsidies for ethanol stoves, fiscal support for supply‑chain development, and “ethanol ATMs” operated by oil‑marketing companies. In late July, a digital collective calling itself the E20 Janta Party launched a consumer‑rights campaign against the mandatory blend. With 25‑27 000 followers on X, the group demands that pure petrol be offered alongside E20, that pump labels display ethanol content, and that independent studies on mileage, emissions and engine wear be conducted.
