Following the 2026 Kerala Assembly election in which the Congress‑led United Democratic Front secured 102 of 140 seats, the All‑India Congress Committee announced on 14 May that V.D. Satheesan would be the state’s chief minister. The decision ended a ten‑day internal contest between Satheesan, K.C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala, during which anti‑Gandhi posters appeared in Wayanad and Kozhikode and factions voiced dissent.

Satheesan, a six‑term MLA and former leader of opposition, thanked party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and the UDF allies, emphasizing a “team UDF” government and pledging to deliver on election promises. The Indian Union Muslim League and other coalition partners welcomed the choice. A swearing‑in ceremony is planned for 18 May at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium, with senior Congress figures including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi expected to attend alongside the Karnataka and Telangana chief ministers. The new administration will now form a cabinet and begin a five‑year term.
